String Resources

STR&emdash;A single string that creates a word or sentence used somewhere within a program.

STR#&emdash; An array of strings that is usually grouped around one topic; for instance, the Trash, which is determined by the whim of the programmer.

Almost all text that Mac programs use comes in a string.

Strings are used in dialog boxes (including alerts and warnings), balloons, messages, and in the case of the Finder, menus. (The Finder is a little weird, and it does this -- it seems to me like it would be smarter to use menus for menus).

Be careful hacking strings because some define file names, and when you change those, the applications can't find the files. Don't panic&emdash;as long as you're working on copies of the files, you should be fine.

Let's get on with strings:

  • STR - changing Finder strings
  • STR# - hacking your trash

These links should give you a pretty good understanding of how to work with strings -- and an idea of some of the fun you can have.
